Student Academic Offerings & Programs

The art program at Lipscomb Elementary is designed to prepare your students with valuable skills for both now and the future. We will learn about problem solving, critical thinking, art techniques, art careers, art history, contemporary artists, communicating and making a difference through art, and more. We’ll also be learning art vocabulary, how to discuss and critique artworks, and having a blast along the way. In addition, we also follow the Tennessee Art Standards and the Williamson County Schools Scope & Sequence. It is my goal that all students will leave art with a broad understanding of art career options and a strong capability to solve problems creatively, as this is a skill that will outlive the art room.

During Library Class, students enjoy a class lesson and a check-out time. Kindergarten students check out 1 book per visit, grades 1-4 check out 2 books and our 5th grade check out 3 books at a time. Lipscomb celebrates the Volunteer State Book Awards by reading the nominated books and our votes help choose the best books in the state of Tennessee. Our hope is that all Lipscomb Bears foster a life-long love of reading.

Our classroom guidance class strives to live into its title: we are building skills for life! From study skills to conflict resolution, school counselors Megan Thiel and Diane Wauford teach students topics to promote social, emotional, and academic development. Students also take turns to become the “Super Star of the Day” to help make our class a positive learning environment. This role is designed to build student confidence, leadership, and advocacy. This year, we are using the book, The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon as our Life Skills theme. We will be utilizing the book’s 5 principles for having the ride of your life including: 1) create a positive vision; 2) fuel your ride with positive energy; 3) no bullies allowed; 4) love your passengers; 5) enjoy the ride!

In the music room at Lipscomb we explore music in a variety of ways. We sing, we listen to and play music from various time periods and cultures. We use technology to enhance our experience and help us create new music of our own. Mr. Andrulonis leads engaging lessons that not only teach students about music but also pull in aspects of literacy, mathematics, science and social studies. Take a peek in the music room at Lipscomb and you may find students preparing for a performance or recording new music on an iPad. Otherwise, you can bet it’s going to be an adventure.

Physical Education at Lipscomb will help students develop motor skills, fitness levels, personal awareness, and cooperative skills. Our goal is to provide skills necessary for a lifetime of physical activity and health. Throughout the year, we offer opportunities for parents to join us in Physical Education for Cosmic Bowling, Roller Skating, and Field Day. The Lipscomb Chorus meets on Wednesday mornings in the music room at 7:35 AM. We perform twice a year at the end of each semester. Chorus is open to all third, fourth and fifth grade students.

The dance team is for students interested in being part of a team and students that enjoy dancing. The dance team is open to all fourth and fifth grade students.

Fifth grade students have the opportunity to help with LTV Morning News. LTV crew members help with hosting, directing and engineering the program which provides daily information about Lipscomb Elementary. At the beginning of each year, fifth grade students are welcome to apply for a position on LTV.

Open to fifth grade students who would like to volunteer 20 minutes, once a week, to be library assistants. Duties include shelving books, assisting younger book shoppers, setting up the library for special events, and gathering materials for projects.

We are looking forward to a great season of running at Lipscomb! Our Run Team is for all grade levels.

Parents will park in the Civitan parking lot and walk the students to the concession stands. Mr. Taylor and Mr. Lawson will walk the students to the track from there.

After Run Team is over for the day, the P.E. Teachers will take the students into the gym and dismiss them to their classes for the day.

The P.E. Teachers will pass out the student lanyards/tags during P.E. the week before Run Team starts, and the students will be responsible for bringing them to Run Team each morning. The tags will keep up with the students’ mileage over the course of five weeks.

Stage Design meets on Wednesday mornings before school, and is only for fifth grade students. There are two sessions: fall and spring.

The Stage Design group will be involved in designing and creating stage decor, costumes, and props for two Chorus/Dance performances throughout the year. We will brainstorm, problem solve, choose color schemes, design, create, and present our work all while working as a team. The goal of this group is to explore art and design aspects of theater, while learning helpful skills in art and collaboration. We will coordinate our design work with the music and dance performances.

A total of 15 students will be selected for the Stage Design group to ensure collaboration opportunities. Students will be selected based on level of interest. However, if there are too many applicants, students will be selected at random from a pool of interested students.

The Lipscomb Student Council is a service learning and leadership program for fourth and fifth grade students. Our Student Council focuses on helping people in our school, our sister school (Cole Elementary School in Nashville), and in our community. Two student representatives are selected from each fourth and fifth grade class by their peers. Interested students write an essay and give an oral presentation through Life Skills class explaining their ideas and motivations for becoming a Student Council representative. LES Student Council members have weekly lunch meetings and visit an assigned “buddy class” (kindergarten-third grade classroom) regularly to communicate the initiatives of the council.
